Abstract:

Two Gregory's Express Letter Books (13 x 8 cm) containing handwritten letters from G.A.W. Leet to his sister Eunice. The 1851 letter tells of Mr. Leet having joined the Navy in 1847 and sailed to Brazil, the Cape of Good Hope, Valparaiso, Chile, and finally California. In California he settled and bought gold claims, in or near Sacramento; at the end of the letter he tells Eunice, "I will send you in this letter a piece of gold." This book has 18 blank pages at the end. The 1852 letter tells of Leet's illness which lasted two months and seems to have nearly killed him. Leet also requests that his sister write to him. The 1852 letter has 28 blank pages at the end.
